Henri Castro was founder of the Texan town, Castroville (located about 15 miles south of San Antonio, founded in 1844). During the times of 1836-1845, Texas was in need of money and people. During this time period, they made colonization contracts with many European countries, including France.
A French empresario, he was important to the French
colonization of Texas. In February 1842,
Castro had an agreement with The Republic Of Texas, which required
him to complete a colonization project within three years.
Castro had many difficulties fulfilling his contract. He had to
go back to France many times and praise the benefits of moving
to Texas, just so he could fulfill his contract. His efforts cost him greatly, and
by 1845, he was bankrupt. However, despite all the difficulties
he had, Castro brought about 2,000 immigrants to Texas.
